Lake Ariel Residence, Lake Ariel, PA

This residence uses the formal and material vocabulary of the Coal Breaker House to give it historical and regional allusion. This, along with careful site analysis and positioning, assist in ensuring the structure’s sensitivity to its nature of place. The formal vocabulary of the breaker stayed true to the breaker and is expressed with cascading shed volumes supported by exposed structure. The material vocabulary stays true to the vertical wood siding, corrugated metal and heavy timber beams that composed the majority of the breaker houses. Features such as pop-outs, overhangs and sunscreens articulate the facades while also providing functional needs such as augmenting interior space and sun protection.
